Chapter 14

The night lay upon him like a heavy blanket of heat. Blade stared up at the tepee’s apex where it opened to reveal a patch of stars. He told himself to relax and asked for sleep to come, but his flesh drummed with a thousand pulses and his mind stirred with images of lips and thighs and cornflower-blue eyes.

Coupling with Elise would be disastrous. He understood her well enough to know that she would feel truly connected to him if they shared such intimacies, and even if she were unhappy with him afterward, she’d stay with him out of duty. Like Julia. But he could not live like that again with a woman. The next woman who shared his bed would do so joyfully and equally, not out of duty or to get a child.

Maybe he should ride into town. The gals at the Rusty Key were always flirting with him. Before he’d married Julia, he’d visited the upper rooms a few times. Although it hadn’t been the best sex he’d ever had in his life, it had been sex. Something was better than nothing.

He covered his eyes with one arm as he rejected that idea. The woman he wanted wasn’t at the Rusty Key. He yearned for Elise with a passion more keen than any he’d ever known. It would be so nice to capture one more kiss from her full pink lips.

Images of her floated behind his eyes, and his loins burned anew. Lately, everything she did made him want to tell her that she’d come to mean so much to him—too much. The past two days he’d ached with no relief in sight. Kissing her only made it worse. He wanted to crush her beneath him and be lost inside her. He wanted to unpin her hair and bury his face in it, then work his way down to—

Soft murmurs interrupted his reverie. Turning his head, he listened. They came again—one voice deep, the other sweetly feminine. Blade closed his eyes in resignation. Mary and James. Their tepee was next to his, and this wasn’t the first time he’d heard them. But not tonight, he pleaded with clenched teeth. Please, not tonight!

Mary giggled. James groaned. Silence. A rustling of bedclothes. Mary moaned. James said something that made her moan again.

Blade clamped his hands over his ears, but it was too late. He knew what they were doing in that tepee next to his, and the hunger inside him beat its drum again. Blade pushed off the bedclothes and emerged from his tepee into the cool night air. He breathed deeply and reached back inside for his pants. He had to get away, he thought, before he went mad.

What was that?

Elise sat up in bed and looked around the room. Penny slept peacefully. Moonlight streamed through the open window; a breeze fluttered the curtains. Nothing was amiss, but something had awakened her. Maybe a dream.

Soft moans … heavy breathing … panting … the sounds flew through the window to Elise and brought hot color to her face.
